Guess who is still playing catch up…yep me! I received my June book ages ago but as I’m still not quite back on track with my posts, I haven’t written this up before now. I’m hoping that over the next week or so I’ll be back up to speed with everything (famous last words I know), so thank you for bearing with me.
This is my third book, and I feel now I can confidently say that the consistency is spot on. I’m so impressed with the communication (monthly hints to check if the author they have in mind will work for you), speed of delivery (books always arrive at the beginning of the month) and the quality of packaging (the pictures speak for themselves). I’ve already asked my parents for the same subscription next year for my birthday so that shows how much I’ve been enjoying this.
A nod to the fantastic packaging…

And now for this month’s book…

TITLE: The Guest List
AUTHOR: Lucy Foley
PUBLISHED: 2020
GENRE: Mystery/Thriller

*Synopsis taken from Goodreads*
The bride ‧ The plus one ‧ The best man ‧ The wedding planner ‧ The bridesmaid ‧ The body
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.
But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.
And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

Now, it was bound to happen sooner or later, but I actually already have a copy of this. I took a gamble and the odds were not in my favour unfortunately. I’ve had The Guest List on my TBR since before it was released, and I received a copy for Christmas, but in true me style I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. This in itself is stupid because the premise sounds like my perfect read. Anyway, when I discovered this book I of course looked into the author a little more and discovered The Hunting Party, which also sounds fantastic! That too went onto my TBR but I told myself I can’t buy any books until I’ve made more of a dent in the ones that I already have. Fast forward to the end of May when the hint came through for the June box and the author name supplied was Lucy Foley. I knew there was a chance that I’d receive The Guest List if I said yes, but I knew there was an equal shot at getting The Hunting Party so I decided to take the risk (who knows what possessed me, I’m not a lucky person as a general rule).
There’s no point in me pretending that I wasn’t disappointed, however there are positives to this. Firstly I can gift this copy on to my mum and sister to read so it certainly won’t go waste, I really think they’ll be excited to read it just like I am. Secondly, I’ve made it a goal to read these subscription box books within a month of receiving them, and that means I can bump this one way up my TBR! I’m so excited to get stuck in! I’ve heard some mixed reviews, so I’m really hoping this one does live up to the hype, I will of course let you know.

Aha it was bound to happen. I did start reading this one but somehow it just wasn’t making me want to know what happened.

I know…typical! Never mind. I hope it grips me a little more, but I must admit I’m losing a bit of hope with it now, shame it didn’t work out for you.

I’m excited to see what will be in your next box, it’s fun to get a random book 🙂

Yes absolutely, random books that you wouldn’t think to try often turn out to be great reads!

Sounds like a good subscription idea, even if the gamble didn’t quite pay off this month. I take it you inform the planners of your reading tastes, so are given books according to personal preferences? I’ve seen mixed reviews about the Guest List also, and probably wouldn’t rush to read it, but I hope you enjoy it.

Yes you take a questionnaire before the subscription so they can get to know you as a reader, and then each month they send a teaser which is the author’s name and you say either yes go ahead, or no pick another. The concept is great but yes the gamble didn’t go in my favour this time. Thanks, I’ve read the same mixed reviews but I’m holding out hope!

What a pity! This is what always puts me off subscriptions, but it’s good that you’ve decided to pass the book along and share the pleasure. I had mixed feelings about The Guest List – will be interested to hear what you think of it.

I know, such a shame when the risk doesn’t pay off, hopefully luck will be on my side for the next one! I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about it actually so I’m not surprised to hear you say that, I really hope I’m not disappointed!
