Heir of Ashes (The Roxanne Fosch Files, #1) by Jina S. Bazzar

TITLE: Heir of Ashes (The Roxanne Fosch Files #1)

AUTHOR: Jina S. Bazzar

I received an electronic copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. My thanks goes to the author for the opportunity to review this book.

Roxanne Fosch was a young girl with the most normal life. By the time she began her adult years she was anything but. Once she reached the age of twenty-two she was on the run, hunted by the society that had ruined her adolescent years, a society that had discovered her incredible abilities and were keen to take advantage of them. Desperate to find out the truth about herself and her past, Roxanne begins a journey of discovery, but will she find the answers she so desperately seeks before those that pursue her catch up to her?

Heir of Ashes is the first in a Young Adult fantasy trilogy. It does have a prequel: The Curse but it is not necessary to read it first. I haven’t read The Curse and I did not feel at a disadvantage. It’s quite a long book so not one to pick up if you’re looking for a quick read but the length shouldn’t put anyone off. It’s very absorbing and as a result it doesn’t feel as though it is as long as it is. It’s entertaining, the chapters are not at all drawn out and so it is not daunting or laborious in the slightest. I took my time reading this one, preferring to read a couple of chapters each night rather than binge read it. I’m glad I approached it in this way, it was easy to pick up and put down and I didn’t feel lost or struggle to remember where I was at or what was going on. This is why I wouldn’t want the length to put off any potential readers; you can take your time with it and it won’t affect the enjoyment.

In my opinion it’s a great representation of the fantasy genre. It’s exciting and I have no doubt that fans of the genre would love this. As I’ve said before sci-fi/fantasy books are not my usual read, that is not to say that I dislike them, rather that I just lean to other genres instead. However, books such as this one are a wonderful reminder to broaden my reading because I really enjoyed it.

My personal highlight would be the characterisation. Roxanne was constructed so well so that she achieved what is so important with a main character; she made me care about her and champion her plight. She’s strong and independent and she never gives up which are all admirable traits. I also loved how the author presented the settings within the novel. I could really build a picture in my mind, and I felt as though that picture was authentic to her intentions.

My only criticism is, that in my opinion the romance element just didn’t quite work. I found it to be a little rushed, and for me it just wasn’t necessary. Having said that, this is the first in a trilogy so perhaps it will make a little more sense in the following books.

Would I recommend this one? Absolutely. It’s a fascinating read and one that I can particularly see appealing to fans of the fantasy genre. I really enjoyed it and I’m excited to read more about Roxanne as the trilogy continues.
