My May in a nutshell (2020)

Firstly I have to start by saying it is so satisfying to be posting this on the first of the month. Usually my nutshell posts go up a good few days into the following month so I’m enjoying that it’s up straightaway this time around…I know, it’s the small things.

Secondly, May has been an awful month overall hasn’t it. I try to steer clear of anything negative or political on this blog because I like it to be a small dose of escapism instead. However, I think it’s important to briefly acknowledge that some truly abhorrent events have taken place in the world of late, some absolutely disgusting actions, and it’s long overdue that we all educate ourselves and, simply treat others how we wish to be treated.

Now, onto my May. It was an unusual month, one that should’ve been super busy but instead was annoyingly really quiet. The reason for this is because there are quite a few birthdays across both sides of the family in May, five to be exact, and unfortunately with the lockdown continuing we were unable to celebrate any of them. Well, that’s not strictly true, we did celebrate our daughter’s but it wasn’t the celebration we had planned or hoped for. Having said that, I still have some highs, lows, and standout moments to share with you so I hope that you enjoy.

HIGH

Walking. I went through a patch of not going out daily for a walk, I didn’t miss it at the time which is odd because I love going for a wander, but once I started venturing out each day again I really appreciated how much better I felt afterwards. With my daughter being a relatively early riser we decided to switch to walking in the morning rather than the afternoon (our previous routine) and I find I much prefer it this way around. For me it is more peaceful and it sets me up for the day…its done wonders for my productivity!

HIGH

The weather. This was a high last month as well, which is pretty surprising seeing as I live in the UK. But, we’ve had quite a bit of hot and sunny weather and I’ve loved it. I don’t need it to be a heatwave every day but I do prefer it to be warm and dry. I always thought that autumn was my favourite season but I’ve really enjoyed this spring weather so I’m starting to sway more towards spring now. It would be a definite winner if I didn’t have hay fever.

LOW

Another thing that I touched upon in last month’s roundup was how pleased I was that I had managed to avoid the reading slumps that seem to have been affecting so many people lately. Well, it hit me in May. Maybe I jinxed myself. Overall I’ve had a rubbish reading month, it’s not that I haven’t been reading because I have, but I’ve been slow and struggling to hold my engagement. I’m not even sure why that is because I have been enjoying what I’ve read, in fact one of the books that I finished up at the beginning of the month was a 5 star read (review coming soon). Fingers crossed June is better…it can’t be much worse!

HIGH AND LOW

Birthdays. As I mentioned May is a busy month for birthdays. On my side it’s my mum and dad, and on my boyfriend’s side it’s his dad and his sister’s boyfriend. Lastly of course we have our daughter (more on her below). We had anticipated it to be a busy month full of celebrations and too much cake but unfortunately that wasn’t to be. With it being my dad’s 60th and my daughter’s 1st we particularly wanted a big celebration for them but we’ll make up for it when we are allowed to, hopefully sooner rather later.

STANDOUT MOMENT

My daughter turned one on May 29th. The fact that it’s been a year since she was born blows my mind, and yet it also seems like ages ago that she arrived. It’s been the most magical year taking care of her and watching her grow. She’s really thriving and I’m super proud of her. We did our best to celebrate with her; we had cake and presents and played with her new toys, we put banners up and blew up balloons. She knew no different but we did, obviously, so it was somewhat bittersweet that we couldn’t give her the celebration that we wanted to on her actual birthday. But she had fun which is the main thing and as I said we will certainly make up for it when we can.

And that’s my May in a nutshell. Not the May I had anticipated, and not as full of celebration as I had wanted but not a bad month overall either.
