The Blogger Recognition Award

Caz over at Mental health 360° was kind enough to nominate me for The Blogger Recognition Award. If you haven’t been over to Caz’s blog already then I really recommend that you do! It is an in depth account of mental health from both a personal and professional approach, with posts that are thought-provoking, heartfelt and full of advice. I always enjoy reading them and have learned a lot.

My answers

How my blog started

I had been reading blogs for years and always wanted my own but I’m a lethal combination of being horrifically indecisive and afraid of my writing being judged. This meant that I always came up with excuses for why I wasn’t starting a blog: I don’t know what to call it, I’m too busy, I don’t know what I want it to look like, I don’t know any of the technical side of things etc etc.

Anyway, I finally plucked up the courage to start the process but I didn’t get as far as publishing any content for over a year…fears and indecision struck again! Well eventually I realised that if I wrote my blog for myself first and foremost then it would be fun, a hobby and if it didn’t all work out then who cares because I could just delete it all anyway.

I made the choice to only tell the people closest to me about it, the people that I could guarantee would only be supportive and that helped, I liked the privacy if that makes sense. So, yes, after many false starts I finally got around to publishing my first post and I’ve been blogging ever since and really enjoying it. It’s been the past year where I’ve really dedicated more time and effort to it and I’m enjoying it more than ever.

When I started my blog I wanted it to be a little bit of everything because that is what I like to read. As time as gone on my blog has pretty much continued along that path, it is a little heavier on book related content these days but I still like the variety of the posts that I’m writing.

My two pieces of advice to new bloggers

My first piece of advice is persevere. It takes time to work out how you want your blog to look, to figure out what it is that you want to write about, and to gain engagement from readers but it will come so don’t give up. As long as you are passionnate about what you write then everything will click into place.

My second piece of advice is to make an effort with other blogs/bloggers. Always respond to any comments you receive, and make sure to check out and comment on other blogs as well. But be sincere, don’t just unashamedly spam someone to promote your own blog.

  1. Belated congratulations – and thanks for acknowledging your experience of indecision , uncertainty, and fear of writing being judged. *
This honesty defines and matches my own experience so closely… Reading your blog on this Tuesday morning that feels like a Monday has steered me closer to writing as my true self So far, only the people closest of all to me know I’m writing my blog – great to find that this is normal too. .

    1. Thank you! It’s so easy to let those feelings take over so the fact that we have started and continued writing is a great achievement 😊

I’m glad you found it helpful, I’m so pleased to know it’s useful 😊 it’s definitely normal, and it’s your blog after all so your choice who you share it with 😊

  2. Love your advice! It’s so important to just let yourself find your natural voice for your blog. When we are our authentic selves I think it really shines through and definitely makes for much more communication and interaction with fellow bloggers. Congrats on the award ☺️☺️💙💖💜

  3. Great post, Jess! It was interesting to read how you began your blog and I’m so glad you did because I think it’s excellent. You have a lovely writing style 😊. I have also worried a lot about what others might think of my writing! I do tell others that I blog but my family don’t take much of an interest lol.

    1. Thanks Stephen! I think your blog is excellent too so that’s a real compliment to receive 😁 I think anything creative, whether it’s writing or art or something else comes with that fear of being judged doesn’t it, it can definitely be hard to overcome at times! Ah, I hope they at least read your posts because they are great 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Jess! And thank you very much for your kind words, too. 🙂 I entirely agree, that fear of being judged is always there when trying something new, but I found that it usually works out quite well in the end!

  4. Thank you so much! This put such a smile on my face – I’m a big fan! I’ve always identified with your writing, maybe because we have similar journeys. Just like you, I was a little nervous to put myself out there. I’m so glad I sucked it up because I’ve loved the adventure! Also, we share the secret aspect – only really close friends and family know about my blog. To be honest, I kind of like it that way. Something exciting about it.

Anyway, thanks again! Love reading your stuff and I’m so glad others do too! 🙂
