How do you avoid feeling depressed about the news?

There ended up being a couple of glitches with this post so I took it down and am reposting it in the hope that WordPress doesn’t let me down again…so if you’ve already read this one and you’re getting another notification for it then I’m sorry! It’s times like this that I wish I wasn’t useless with technology!

A bit of a random (high risk of rambling) one from me today. It’s a question that has got me thinking so I thought I would throw it out there to ask you your thoughts.

It’s the question in the title…How do you avoid feeling depressed about the news? Well, how do you? If you clicked on this post expecting/hoping for an answer then I’m sorry, I don’t have one.

I do however have some thoughts…

I realise that not all news is depressing. There are lots of positive pieces in the news as well, but I do feel like the bad outweighs the good…or is the bad just promoted more? I don’t know, but I do feel like I am more likely to stumble upon a negative news story than a positive one. Perhaps I source my news in the wrong places.

I realise that information is important, and it’s naïve at best to ignore the things that can be unsettling. Some of it will have a direct impact upon decisions we make, our safety potentially etc etc. and so it is important to arm ourselves with as much knowledge as we can.

I’m not suggesting to shy away.

I’m not suggesting to not be compassionate or sympathetic.

I’m not suggesting we all turn into robots and stop feeling, stop caring.

I am however asking if it is possible to care but in a way that is not extreme or too consuming in day to day life.

I remember my old manager telling me about the concept of the ‘sh*t sandwich’ with regards managing staff. He told me that if you need to criticise an area of an individual’s performance then begin with a positive, pop the negative in the middle and then close up with something else positive. Perhaps this is the approach to take when it comes to the news, find positivity both before and after the negative, the disturbing, the uncomfortable. I just don’t think it would work though, at least not for me. I think that I would still feel disheartened.

For me personally, the good does not outweigh the bad. By this I mean that whilst it is great to hear of inspirational people achieving wonderful things, it will not eradicate or justify a cruel act. Of course we should still strive and work hard and have hope, absolutely, I’m not suggesting giving up.

I love knowledge, I love learning new things, I love feeling as though I am firmly ‘in the loop’ when it comes to the news. I just wish there was a way to keep up to date without feeling so disheartened.

Maybe I am looking at this in the wrong way. Maybe an emotional response of this nature is exactly what is needed to ensure good people outweigh bad people. Perhaps if I didn’t feel down after reading bad news then that would speak of my character in ways that I wouldn’t be proud of.

As I said at the start, no clear answers and a bit of a ramble. I think I have left myself with more questions than I started with.

So, let me ask you, how do you avoid feeling depressed about the news? Perhaps you don’t avoid those feelings, if so then why not? I would love to hear your thoughts!
