Reading rituals

Do you have rituals that you follow when it comes to reading?

This is something that I hadn’t thought about until recently when I sat down to read a book and had barely got one paragraph in when I realised that something wasn’t right. What was it? I hadn’t made a drink. Sounds silly I know, particularly when I wasn’t even thirsty, but I couldn’t continue until I had one next to me. This got me thinking about what other rituals I follow when it comes to reading and so I thought I would share them with you.

Are there any that you follow too?

1 – Make a drink. As I said above I need to have a drink next to me when I’m reading. If it’s daytime then it will more than likely be a coffee. In the evening it tends to be a glass of wine or a herbal tea. This will depend on my mood/what kind of day I have had/what my current read is.

2 – Grab a notebook. I have to have a notebook next to me when I’m reading so that I can jot down thoughts and quotes. This might be with a blog post in mind or it might simply be for me to look back over at some point. I love reminding myself of quotes that resonated with me in books that I have read.

3 – Get comfy. Maybe I will put my pyjamas on or load up the sofa with cushions that I can sink into. Perhaps I will settle into bed and make sure my phone is out of the way so I don’t get distracted. Whatever it means at that moment, it is important to me that I am comfortable so I can enjoy my time with my book.

4 – Check over my bookshelf. This one is a bit of a strange habit that I have found myself following recently. I don’t get as much time to read as I would like, (does anyone?!) so when I pick up a book I feel the need to double check my bookshelf and make sure there isn’t anything else that I would rather be reading.

5 – Make sure I have a bookmark. I hate pages being folded down in books! I find it messy and unnecessary. I have a couple of really pretty bookmarks and I love using them, but if it comes to it I’m happy to just grab a scrap of paper, an old receipt…anything that can mark my page without me having to fold down the corner.

And that’s it. The rituals that I always follow when I’m reading. It’s only recently that I have realised I do these things and yet, I can’t remember a time where I didn’t do any of them, so, I figure they must be pretty longstanding.

Has this post made you realise that you have any book related habits? Does it bother you or are you okay with it?

I’m fine with mine. I have little quirks and habits in most areas of my life so it doesn’t surprise me that some would have crept in with reading.
