I had a birthday this month. I turned 29. I’m not a birthday person as a general rule, this is probably because I hate having all the attention on me! But, I still like to mark the occasion, so I did. Therefore I thought I would share with you what I got up to.
For someone that has just said that I don’t like a fuss for my birthday I am going to sound a little hypocritical now when I tell you that I actually celebrated more than once! I had an early/mini celebration just me and my boyfriend first and then on my actual birthday I went back to my hometown to celebrate with my family. Both were lovely and I really enjoyed! I shall start with what I did for the early celebration with my other half.
We got up nice and early (unusual for him but nothing out of the ordinary for me).
From there we prepared a picnic and set out for the day. The sun was shining which was great, luck isn’t usually on my side with the weather so this was a relief! We headed into town to take a trip to one of my favourite places…Waterstones. He had gifts for me already but he wanted me to pick out a book because he knows how obsessed I am! I was more than happy to do this, I can lose hours staring at books and just taking in the ‘new book smell’.
I ended up picking up three books, anyone that likes reading will understand you can never just stop at one! In fact I was proud of myself that I narrowed it down to three! The books that I picked up were: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriaty, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and Jane Austen at home by Lucy Worsley.
I picked the first one because (embarrassingly) I didn’t realise the TV show was based on a book. I absolutely loved watching the show so I’m really excited to see what the book is like and which I end up preferring, that’s if I do end up with a preference of course. The second choice was one of those books that I have been meaning to pick up for ages but just didn’t get around to. Again, I have seen the show and I know there is some controversy with it but I actually really liked it! I did know that this one was based on a book and like I said, I had always planned on reading it but just never got around to picking it up until now. As for the third, well, this one was an impulse choice. I spotted it and as you will already know if you aren’t new here, Jane Austen is one of my favourite authors. I know a little about her life but not enough so I’m really excited to learn more about the person behind the literature.
Have you read any of these books or watched the TV show adaptations for the first two? What did you think?
After this, we went to a favourite spot of ours to have our picnic and a walk. It was really nice! We saw lots of swans and ducks. I shall share some photos so you can appreciate how beautiful this place is!
See, I told you it was stunning didn’t I!
After this, it was home for a nice dinner and a cosy film on the sofa. Definitely a day to remember!
Fast forward to my actual birthday and it was an early start and the preparation of a picnic once again. This time however I was gifted the cutest card from my boyfriend with a beautiful message inside. I’m supposed to be the writer but he could totally steal my thunder because he really does have a way with words! I had my presents from him at this point too which was the best way to start the day.
From here we packed up the car and set off to meet my family. The weather was stunning once again but we did get stuck in traffic on the motorway. It doubled our journey time which was really frustrating but at least my family didn’t have to wait for us in the rain!
We met (eventually) in a park and tucked into our packed lunches and then we played with my nephews in the playground before heading off for a walk along the river. Again I will share some photos below so you can see how gorgeous it was! We did walk a lot further than expected however, so there was lots of yawning from us all when we returned to my parents house. It was worth it though!
After this, it was presents and cake, my six year old nephew carried my cake in and it was the cutest moment and probably my highlight for the day, he is adorable! We used up a bit more energy after this with a game of hide and seek, it helped me further build up an appetite for my dad’s roast dinner though so no complaints from me! And that was my birthday. It was the perfect way to spend the day and I felt very lucky to enjoy some quality time and receive some amazing gifts!
Now that I have shared the festivities with you I wanted to round off this post with talking a little bit about age. As I said at the beginning I am not a birthday person and I don’t like a fuss. However, this particular birthday was a little strange for me because it dawned on me that I am now heading into the final year of my twenties. This made me feel a little strange. I had thoughts like ‘have I achieved everything I want to achieve before I enter a new decade’ and ‘wow I really am, undeniably, an adult now’.
These thoughts hadn’t ever occurred to me before. I did ponder on it for quite a while I admit, before I came to the conclusion of sod it (for want of a better phrase). I’m one of those people that tries to look forward not back and tries to have no regrets. I am a ‘everything happens for a reason’ kind of girl. Therefore, who cares that my twenties are nearly behind me, who cares if my twenties shaped up to be how I expected or even how I wanted. Overall, I’m happy, I have a great family, a great relationship, great friends. I could absolutely be a lot worse off!
So, I suppose what I’m trying to say is that anything that I haven’t achieved that I want to is only a list that I will keep working on. As long as I work hard and I keep motivated I believe I will get there and if that ends up being in my thirties or even later then it doesn’t matter because as long as I get there and I am happy and have fun along the way then that is what counts!
How do you feel about getting older? What is your opinion on birthdays and age? I would love to hear!
I hope you have enjoyed reading this post! It ended up being a lot longer than I thought so thanks for sticking with me.
Until the next time…Jess x
