The everyday

My January in a nutshell

Seeing as it is already halfway through February, I thought I had better get a move on and post my January roundup. This is something I want to try and do every month on here, a little ‘in a nutshell’ post about the previous month. This will include highs and lows and stand out moments for me.

I hope you enjoy reading!

I think I will start with a professional high which was that I was awarded Employee of the year at our annual staff awards ceremony. This was particularly special to me because I was shortlisted by management and then voted the winner by my peers so I really feel like all the work I try to put in everyday has not gone unnoticed. As with any job there are highs and lows, good days and bad days, but it is worth it when you keep positive and stick at doing your best. Some recognition doesn’t hurt though so I was chuffed with my trophy and bottle of bubbly!

January was the month when I decided to shortlist some titles from my book shelf that I have been meaning to read for the longest time! I actually shared them in another post which you can find here if you would like to see which ones I picked. I wasn’t sure how I would get on with this. I find setting targets with reading can go one way or the other for me. Either it keeps me on track to reach my goal or it puts too much pressure on me to read certain things in a certain time frame. This is why I simply said that I wanted to read the books this year, at some point. However, I have already finished one of the titles on the list (blog post on that book coming soon) and am on to the second so I’m really happy with that! It remains to be seen if I continue this well, but I’m off to a strong start and will keep you updated!

I have managed to do a lot of organising throughout January. I went through all my beauty products and waved goodbye to stuff that I was never going to use. It turned out to be as difficult as I thought it would be but I actually managed it! I need to do the same with my clothes but one step at a time, I couldn’t face both in the same month, so perhaps I will have ‘clothes sorting’ in my February roundup…fingers crossed! Back to the beauty products though, it was a task that I had wanted to do for ages so I’m really pleased with myself that I finally got it done. It may sound small but it’s a big thing for me! I managed to do lots of other organising too, I checked over all my finances, I sorted out getting my dental checkup, and I made lots of lists of everything that I still want to sort out so that it seems more manageable and isn’t a bunch of stress swimming around in my head. Besides, I love lists, you may already know this if you have checked out my Lots and lots of lists post.

A not so positive feature of January is that I have had what feels like the beginnings of a cold for the entire month! It never seems to come to anything, I just wake up feeling very stuffy and generally groggy and it seems to improve as the day goes on before rearing its head at some point in the evening. It has been annoying more than anything, I don’t know if it is weather related or if my immune system is determined to not let me get too ill but it has been a little frustrating to say the least! Having said that, it has been a great excuse to drink lots of honey and lemon…delicious!

Another not so positive feature of January was my engagement on here and on social media. I didn’t post anywhere near as often as I would have liked and I don’t even really know why! I fell into a cycle though, I lost motivation then stressed at the lack of content and then felt like it was too overwhelming to get back on track. I feel better now though and I am working hard to ensure I am more regular with my engagement on all platforms because I love doing this! You can follow me on Instagram and Pinterest and you can follow the blog by hitting the blue button or by signing up via email. This will be to the side of the post or at the bottom depending on what device you are currently using. I would really appreciate the support, so if you do want to keep up to date then I would love to have you around!

Another less than positive aspect of January has been spending time with friends and family, as in, I haven’t spent as much time with the important people in my life as I would like to! This is something that I will not let continue into February, I’m going to get myself organised so that I have the free time to spend with those that I love. It’s my birthday in February so that gives me a great reason to organise lots of fun stuff with all the people that I have a good time with. Simply put, I haven’t made enough memories in January and that needs to change!

To end on a high, I was fortunate enough to have another review published in the poetry magazine that I write for. I won’t go into too much detail because I have a post coming where I explain all of this but basically I get sent a poetry book twice yearly that the magazine wants to place a spotlight upon and I write the review of it. I have done this a few times now and it doesn’t get any less rewarding as time goes on! It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and something that I love doing! I have had some brilliant feedback from it which is great but most importantly it has brought literature into my life that I don’t think I would have discovered otherwise. It’s also sparked a love for poetry that I didn’t have before which is great!

I think that’s all I have for you, January was a pretty quiet month for me both personally and professionally, I didn’t realise quite how quiet until I began writing this.

How was your January? Any stand out moments, good or bad? I would love to hear!

Thanks for reading!

Until the next time…Jess x
